Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi

Welcome to Nairobi. Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. We will be staying at the Pullman Hotel, a contemporary and comfortable space in the city — the perfect place to land, rest, and reset before the journey begins. Once you have settled in, you will meet the other photographers and your hosts, Giovanna and Krista, for an authentic Nairobi coffee. It will be a relaxed introduction to your tour, with an opportunity to share inspirations and get to know one another.
Overnight: Pullman Hotel
Meals: Dinner

Day 2: Samburu – Nairobi to Archer's Post

We leave Nairobi early, travelling north through Central Kenya, crossing the Equator at the base of Mt Kenya before arriving at Archer's Post in time for lunch. In the evening, we visit the Samburu women at the Umoja village for our first photo session. The Samburu are often referred to as the “butterfly people” for their vibrant clothing and intricate beadwork. The women adorn themselves in layered beadwork — wide collars, stacked necklaces, and long strands of colour that move with the body. Their headdresses are structured and beaded, creating strong sculptural forms that frame the face. Umoja, meaning “unity,” is a women-only village, formed as a place of independence and support.
Overnight: Umoja Bandas
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 3: Samburu Game Reserve & Rendille – Ngurunit

We begin with an early morning game drive in Samburu Game Reserve. After breakfast, we continue to Ngurunit to meet the Rendille. Their villages are made up of low, dome-shaped huts constructed from branches and woven materials. Life here is centred around livestock, family, and survival in a harsh environment.
Overnight: Golbo Guesthouse
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 4: Rendille – Lake Turkana

Today, we visit another Rendille village to immerse ourselves in their way of life in the harsh, arid desert. This includes joining the warriors at the famous Singing Wells, where they sing rhythmically to dig for water in unison and encourage their animals to drink. In the afternoon, we travel to Lake Turkana, known as the “Jade Sea,” the world’s largest desert lake with deep historical significance.
Overnight: Palmshade Resort
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 5: Loyangalani. Turkana Village.

We will spend the full day in and around Loiyangalani, starting with a morning visit to a Turkana village. The Turkana are a nomadic people who distinguish themselves with elaborate, beaded hairstyles and vibrant cultural ceremonies. Despite living in one of the harshest environments on earth, their lives are full of rich traditions and cultural practices that showcase the resilience of this remarkable tribe.
Overnight:  Palmshade resort
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 6: Samburu, Rendille. Lake Turkana.

An early start will take us to visit a Samburu and Rendille village within Loiyangalani. The Samburu warriors, or “morans”, are the young, unmarried men who are tasked with protecting the tribe and livestock. With their vibrant red attire, elaborate beaded jewellery and ochre-dyed hair, life in the Samburu village offers ample visual storytelling opportunities. In the afternoon, we will return to Lake Turkana for an intimate shoot with a select group of villagers at sunset.
Overnight:  Palmshade resort
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 7: Gabra, Turkana.

After an early breakfast, we leave for the Chalbi desert and travel to meet the Gabra community. With their distinctive, portable geometric huts that are decorated with natural and hand-woven fabrics, the Gabra are a tightly knit, family-oriented community that relies on kinship and reciprocity for survival.
Overnight:  Palmshade resort

Day 8: Samburu. Malaral.

Today we leave Loiyangalani and head south to Malaral, stopping on the way at a Samburu village.

Day 9: Pokot. Lake Baringo.

Today, we proceed West to Lake Baringo, where we meet the secretive Pokot community. With their giant beaded necklaces and use of feather, leather and brass adornments, this is a rare opportunity to capture such a distinctive tribe. We will then continue to Baringo in the evening for an overnight stay at Sindai resort.
Overnight:  Sindai resort.

Day 10: Pokot.

We will rise early to spend meaningful time with another Pokot tribe in their village, and in the afternoon, we will have another intimate photoshoot with select members of the tribe.

About

Giovanna Aryafara

I’m an Australian photographer based in Bali, and for over 40 years, I’ve travelled the world capturing soulful portraits that tell real stories from remote tribal communities to sacred ceremonies and everyday moments of beauty and connection

My work has taken me deep into the Omo Valley of Ethiopia, where I’ve spent years building relationships with the tribes and learning about their traditions, strength, and creativity. These journeys have been life-changing and are at the heart of my photography

As an award-winning photographer, I feel it’s an honour to document these cultures and share them through exhibitions, books, and now this special photographic tour. I’ll be guiding you alongside my daughter Krista, and we can’t wait to welcome you into this experience of deep connection, creativity, and inspiration
