About Giovanna

Images with Soul
Giovanna Aryafara’s journey in photography began more than four decades ago in Canberra, Australia, and continued in New Zealand, where she worked as a school photographer. Now based in Bali, her work takes her across Africa, India, Nepal, Myanmar and Indonesia, building a body of photographs that explores cultural identity, tradition and the human experience.
Giovanna works exclusively with natural light. Her approach is relaxed and immersive, allowing time to observe, spend time with people and understand the setting before raising her camera. From the cattle camps of Ethiopia’s Omo Valley to the riverbanks of Varanasi and the ceremonies of Bali, her photographs bring attention to individual lives and the details that give each place its character.
An instinct for colour, texture and composition shapes her work. Her portraits invite a closer look, while her wider photographs place people within the landscapes and communities they call home.
Her photography has been exhibited internationally and recognised through awards and editorial features. Her book, Images with Soul - Tribes of Africa, brings together years of photography among the communities of East Africa.
In Berawa, Bali, the Giovanna Photography Gallery offers a place to experience this work in person. The new gallery’s restrained design, natural surfaces and warm lighting create space for the photographs to hold the viewer’s attention. Collections are available as fine art prints and French flax linen wall hangings, bringing Giovanna’s photographs into homes and interior spaces.
The Photography Gallery and Bungalow Living Bali Homewares Store now sit side by side in Berawa, connected by an Indian archway. Visitors can move between the photographs and collections of furniture, textiles and homewares, experiencing Giovanna’s eye for colour, texture and design across both spaces.
Giovanna also leads small photography expeditions alongside her daughter, Krista, sharing an approach grounded in natural light, thoughtful observation and respect for the people they photograph.
